Kitesurfing in Tarifa for Beginners: What to Know Before You Start
Want to learn kitesurfing in Tarifa? Here's everything you need to know before booking your first lesson: best season, required level and practical details.
Kitesurfing in Tarifa: the beginner's guide
Tarifa is one of the best spots in the world to learn kitesurfing, but future students often ask the same questions before booking. Here are our answers.
1. What is the best season to start?
Tarifa enjoys wind almost all year round thanks to its position between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The period from April to the end of October is ideal for getting started, with reliable wind conditions and pleasant temperatures. March and November are also excellent months, with wind just as present and the added benefit of quieter spots.
2. Do you need a particular level to start?
No prior experience is needed. Our beginner lessons always start with mastering the kite on land (control, safety, wind window) before any water time. A minimum level of fitness and some comfort in water is enough: most students stand up on their board within the first sessions.
3. How long does it take to progress?
Plan for around ten hours of lessons to become genuinely autonomous and safe: relaunching your kite, riding upwind, and stopping under full control. With 6 hours, you'll get a good overall feel and take your first steps on the board, but not much more. That's why we recommend a multi-day course rather than a single lesson.
4. What's included in our beginner lessons?
Full equipment (kite, board, harness, wetsuit), certified instructors, small groups for maximum individual practice, and personalised follow-up of your progress throughout the course.
5. One last tip
Book your week with a bit of flexibility on the days: wind in Tarifa is reliable over time but varies day to day, and our instructors adapt the programme to conditions so you progress in the safest way possible.
